Rooted in Himalayan wisdom. Shaping leaders for a just and sustainable world.
Bridging Himalayan traditions and global perspectives to create an education that transforms both self and society.
What would higher education look like if it were rooted in karuṇā (compassion), prajñā (wisdom), and the Himalayan way of learning?
In the Himalayan tradition, education has always been more than the transfer of knowledge. It is lineage and wisdom carried through relationships of trust, modeled by teachers, and passed forward with care. This spirit, known locally as samaya (sacred bond), shapes how we approach learning at KBU.
Our name comes from Khangchendzonga, the mountain revered across Sikkim as guardian and teacher. For the people who live in its shadow, the mountain symbolizes humility, strength, and balance. For us, it is also a reminder that education must remain rooted in place while welcoming new horizons.
KBU is sponsored by Denjong Charities Trust, a Sikkim-based organization dedicated to education, culture, and community development.
The Trust founded Taktse International School in Gangtok (2006), now widely recognized for its inquiry-driven and student-centered approach. The success of Taktse, and the networks of educators it nurtured, provide a strong foundation for KBU.
Extending this legacy, the Trust now seeks to bring the same spirit of innovation, reflection, and rang sem rang ki tawa (“your mind, yours to observe”) into higher education.
KBU is envisioned as a small, intentional, and globally connected community of learning. What sets us apart:
Lineage & Mentorship
Education as an unbroken chain of wisdom, carried through human connection.
Co-Creation
Programs designed with contributions from both global educators and local practitioners
Global–Local Balance
A reflective hub that connects Himalayan traditions with international perspectives.
Intentional Scale
Focused cohorts that allow for depth, dialogue, and close mentorship.
Accessible Education
Equity at the core, with scholarships, donor support, and post-paid contribution models.
