Leadership & Structure
Bridging Himalayan traditions and global perspectives to create an education that transforms both self and society.
01
Our Legal Foundation
Khangchendzonga Buddhist University (KBU) was established through the KBU Act, 2020, passed by the Government of Sikkim. This Act provides a strong legal foundation while entrusting us with the responsibility to create an institution of lasting value for the region and the world
02
Our Sponsoring Body
KBU is sponsored by the Denjong Charities Trust, a Sikkim-based organization with a proven track record in education, culture, and community development. The Trust also founded Taktse International School in Gangtok (2006), which has become a respected model of inquiry-driven and student-centered learning. The same spirit of care and innovation now shapes KBU.

Principles of Leadership
Our model of university leadership is guided not only by statutory law, but also by Himalayan values of wisdom, compassion, and trust. These guide every decision, ensuring leadership is both accountable and humane.
Integrity
Transparent and accountable processes.
Inclusivity
Representation of diverse voices in councils and committees.
Sustainability
Protecting the interests of future generations.
Wisdom & Compassion
Leadership rooted in reflection and service.
University Authorities
The KBU Rules & Regulations define a clear structure of leadership and oversight:
Board of Governors
The apex authority of the University, providing overall direction, policy approval, and safeguarding the mission.
Academic Council
Gyana Sabha
The principal academic body, ensuring quality of teaching, research, and standards.
Board of Management
The principal executive authority, overseeing daily academic and administrative operations
Board of Overseers
Nyos Guthi
An independent oversight body that ensures accountability and transparency are maintained.
During this founding phase, KBU is being guided by a team appointed by the Denjong Charities Trust, until these statutory authorities are fully established.
As a new university, KBU is starting small and intentional. Our leadership and structures are designed to ensure that even in this early phase, every decision is guided by fairness, accountability, and care for students. For families, this means confidence that their children are joining an institution with strong roots supported by the Denjong Charities Trust and inspired by the proven success of Taktse International School.
As KBU grows, these structures will evolve with it, providing the stability, transparency, and vision needed to support every learner’s journey. Our aim is to create a leadership model that is reflective, inclusive, and globally connected while staying true to the cultural diversity of Sikkim
